DVD-9 and DVD-5
There are many DVD formats which usually make us confused. Then what are they and what are their differences?
There are usually DVDr, DVDrw, DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10 and DVD-18. Here we mainly talk about DVD-5 and DVD-9. DVD-5 is a single-side, single-layer DVD that store about 4.7GB, which is 4.38 computer Gigabytes where 1 kilobyte equals 1024 bytes. Video DVD, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW support this format. DVD-5 is also called "single side, single layer". While DVD-9 is a single-side, dual-layer DVD which can store about 8.5GB, which is 7.95 computer Gigabytes. Video DVD supports this format, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW not included. A DVD-9 is basically two compressed plastic DVD-5s which are not burned. Usually DVD can be copied from DVD-5 to DVD-5, from DVD-9 to DVD-9, and from DVD-5 to DVD-9. And with some featured software, you can compress and copy a dual layer (DVD-9) movie into one DVD-5 disc and split one DVD-9 movie to two DVD-5s, such as the upcoming DVD-Cloner for Mac. By the way, here we give a brief introduction to the two related DVD formats—DVD-10 and DVD-18. DVD-10 is a double-side, single-layer DVD which can fit up to 9.4GB or 8.7 computer GB. Video DVD, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW all support this format. DVD-18 is a double-side, double-layer DVD which can store 17GB or 15.9 computer GB. Similar to DVD-9, it is supported by Video DVD, but not by DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW.
